    Description

In the immortal words of the almighty toga-touting Emperor Antonio, that toga-touting tyrant ruler of the Romanesque subaquatic land of Seatopia, "wake up Megalon!!....come on Megalon!!!...come on Megalon rise up now to the earth's surface....destroy our enemies!!!!"  And believe me I know because I heard him say it at least 10 times within a couple of weeks, as I haunted the movie theatres during the summer of 1976 to get another viewing of the epic Godzilla film given a wide release thanks to the giant monster buzz around Dino De Laurentis' King Kong (1976).
Needless to say, Godzilla vs Megalon (1973/76) was not quite to the level of De Laurentis' remake (I'm not certain if that's bad or good), but at 11 years old who could resist seeing this pugnacious kaiju along with rainbow robot Jet Jaguar taking on Megalon and Gigan on the big screen? Plus I had to figure out what films all the poorly matched special effects stock footage was from.
This spectacular art of Godzilla and Megalon atop the World Trade Centers was plastered in every major newspaper in the US, and certainly makes for a wonderful movie poster even if the monsters don't actually make it into any city much less New York. For whatever reason I just love the fact that the artist  (Hippel?) depicts a shower of Megalon's combustible boogers as if they were pachinko balls (the real thing in the film looks a lot less refined).
